Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used. Today cogeneration saves Europe around 200 million tonnes of CO2 per year. By 2030, studies indicate that at least 20% of electricity and 25% of heat could come from cogeneration in Europe.

Under this section, you will find more detailed information about the principle of "cogeneration" and why it so important for Europe's transition towards a low-carbon energy system. We provide you here with some key facts and figures about cogeneration, cogeneration in Europe and Europe's energy system. Moreover, we take a step aside from the theory and all figures and have a look at how cogeneration works in reality and how people can benefit from cogeneration for their homes and businesses.

Cogeneration systems and units are not evenly spread over the European Union. In certain Members States, it is more used than in others. You can find out here which Members States deploy more cogeneration and what are the reasons for this.
