Europe currently faces various energy challenges and cogeneration can contribute in reaching strategic EU energy objectives, such as security of supply, CO2 emission reductions and energy efficiency. The 15th COGEN Europe Annual Conference therefore put the theme ‘Cogeneration: a strategic energy choice for Europe’ squarely on the EU agenda.
This Conference is the world’s largest annual cogeneration event in the calendar and took place this year on 21-22 April in Brussels. The audience for the Annual Conference is executive level representatives from the various stakeholder groups in the industry ranging from financers of cogeneration projects through to end users. The conference showed best practise across the full range of cogeneration applications from industry to domestic, and experts from all sectors gave their response to the challenge of the economic downturn.
The first day focused on the policy part with the following confirmed speakers:
- Roman Portužák, Director of Power Engineering Department, Czech Minister of Industry and Trade
- Pirjo-Liisa Koskimäki, Head of Unit “Energy Efficiency”, DG TREN, European Commission
- Yvon Slingenberg, Head of Unit “Market based instruments including greenhouse gas emissions trading”, DG Environment, European Commission
- Jorgen Henningsen, European Policy Centre
The second day was based around the following three themes:
- Large-scale industrial cogeneration
- Heat grids and commercial cogeneration
- New developments in the sector (e.g. micro CHP, biogas)
In the evening of 21 April the Conference Dinner took place in the prestigious Bibliothèque Solvay, located near the European Parliament in Brussels.
