Evidence is growing that we need more action on climate change. We have to step up our efforts in decarbonising our economy if we want to stay below a global temperature rise of 1.5°C, as prescribed by the Paris Agreement. Against this backdrop, COGEN Europe and Mytilineos are organising a high-level debate on one of the most significant challenges: Decarbonising industrial heat.

The heating sector represents 50% of energy consumption in Europe. With more than 30% of that heat being used in industrial processes at various temperatures, this sector will require profound decarbonisation. As the European Union is putting forward its long-term greenhouse gas reduction strategy, a comprehensive approach to industrial heat is a priority. While decarbonising the sector, European energy-intensive industries will need to continue to have access to an affordable and reliable heat supply to keep their businesses afloat amidst rising global competition.

This debate will take a deeper look at the required solutions. More precisely, how can we decarbonise heat cost-effectively and meet the energy needs of Europe's industry, while boosting competitiveness, sustainable jobs and growth? And what will be the barriers on our path to a decarbonised industry?
