As the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) drew to a close in June, COGEN Europe welcomed the 25 June Energy Council conclusions on the Future of Energy Systems. The document, adopted by EU Energy Ministers, outlines principles and priorities for the future of energy systems in the Energy Union.

The conclusions highlight the important role of energy systems integration and sector coupling, energy efficiency and renewable energy, while emphasizing the need for a just energy transition. Cogeneration is listed as an energy infrastructure priorities as the Member States agree to “Exploit the significant potential for the deployment of renewable heat, waste heat and highly efficient CHP in the heating and cooling sector, including district heating and cooling.”

This is in line with COGEN Europe’s vision of a resilient, decentralised and carbon neutral European energy system by 2050 with cogeneration as its backbone, empowering European citizens and industry to generate their own efficient, reliable and affordable clean heat and power locally. COGEN Europe continue contributing the energy system of the future, engaging with EU policymakers and key industry stakeholders as the debate continues.
